Foundered during trials in Liverpool Bay 1st June 1939.

During a refit in the UK in 1942 Thunderbolt was fitted with two watertight cylinders aft of her bridge structure enabling her to carry two chariots.

Completed Fourteen War Patrols.  She was lost on her fifteenth patrol.  Depth-charged and sunk by the Italian corvette Cicogna on the 14th March 1943
